The Hangovers


Got a hangover? Cure it with The Hangovers! 

The Hangovers is a band based in Central Illinois, who make rock and roll style music. The band consists of Mollie as the lead singer, Josh on guitar, Sammy on bass, and Kyle on drums. The Hangovers is a very lively band, as Mollie is usually moving around and dancing on stage as she sings. The vocals from Mollie are smooth and beautiful. She has a wide range, and can reach some fun high notes that you can't help but cheer for when hearing them live! These vocals offer a wonderful dynamic when paired with the harder rock sounds of the guitar and drums. 

The Hangovers have been releasing music since 2020. Their first EP Planet Hangover from 2022 consists of one of my favorite songs of theirs, "Blüebyrd." Their latest single was released in 2023, "Insanity," and is another song I would highly recommend checking out. Additionally, their most popular song on Spotify is "The Creek" with over 60k listens!

I was able to contact The Hangovers and ask them a few questions to better get to know them as a band!

How did The Hangovers get started?

We got started at Millikin University in Decatur playing in our college apartment til our neighbors would start banging on on the ceiling. We first got our name The Hangovers from when 2 of our past members had alcohol poisoning and were puking in the street outside the campus venue we were playing.

How would you describe the genre of music you make?

We vary a lot in the styles we play but it’s all variations on psychedelic rock.

How long have you been making/playing music?

We’ve been making/playing music together since about 2018, this iteration has been going since last year august 23’. Although individually we’ve all been playing since we were much younger.

What inspires you most to make music?

I feel like we all inspire each other, nothing renews my passion for music like getting together with these guys for rehearsal or a show. They are seriously some of the coolest most talented people I’ve ever met and somehow the universe let form a band.

What do you do for fun, outside of music?

Outside of music we don’t do much else other than like our jobs. Our singer Mollie is a yoga/voice teacher, our bassist manages a gym, our drummer manages a cannabis dispensary, and our guitarist just literally lives and breathes guitar.

What bands do you consider similar to your own, music genre wise?

Similar bands are like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin, Heart, Fuzz, King Gizzard, Cage the Elephant

Are you looking for a new and heartwarming sound? You should check out Silly Old Bear!  Silly Old Bear is a project started by Jacob and Conner over a year ago, and they are based around Peoria. Estrogen Molotov

I have a sound to show you that will knock your socks off! Based out of Central Illinois, Estrogen Molotov is a transgender noise duo who offers a unique listening experience, and they are one of only a few noise bands in the area! Estrogen Molotov consists of Kailyn (he/him), who is based in Peoria, and DK (they/she), who is from Ottawa. They started making music in 2022, and this was one of Kailyn’s first creative musical projects. DK on the other hand has her own solo music under the name Space Dust, and they play live bass for Your Arms Are My Cocoon. Both members take turns banging the drum, playing guitar or bass, performing vocals, and taking control of the synth. They make use of unusual techniques to create sounds you wouldn’t expect to see performed on a stage. If you have never listened to noise before, it takes some getting used to, but it is hard to look away once it starts! Aftersome

You may be asking yourself,  after what? What is Aftersome? Well, you don't have to wonder any longer as I am here to enlighten you today.  Illinois is full of creative communities that build each other up and  support each other’s work.  Aftersome is one of numerous amazing bands in the central Illinois area.  I was introduced to Peoria's DIY music scene in 2021 when I made friends with them. Aftersome is a three-piece group in their early 20s from the Peoria area. The band consists of Luke, Lennon, and Ethan, who all happen to be left-handed! These three fellas are best friends, and they love Red Hot Chili Peppers.  Luke is the drummer, but also one of the singers! He is skilled at keeping a level singing voice with all the physical work involved in drumming. Lennon is the bassist and other singer of Aftersome.
