Jake Rebman is a songwriter and performer in Peoria who makes country music. He sings and plays guitar. When performing live, he is joined by The Waitin’ Rounders to provide a full band experience. They consist of Jake’s sister Sophia on vocals, Linc on drums, Chase on pedal steel, Dusty on lead guitar, and Jameson on bass. Additionally, Jake’s brother sometimes helps run merch at shows, creating a bit of a family business.  

Jake Rebman released his first album, Songwriting Competition, in 2022. I don’t regularly listen to country music, but I really enjoy Jake’s music. This is especially true as there are not many local country artists in the Peoria area so it provides variation. One of my favorite songs of Jake’s is “Walmart Aisle.” It is an upbeat and fun song that is hard not to dance along with. Jake’s most recent release is a live recording of “Boxer with a Tail.” I highly recommend that you check out Jake Rebman’s music, as you will not be disappointed! 

I was able to contact Jake Rebman and ask him a few questions about his music and songwriting!

What inspires you most to make music?

Jake: I guess it all started with writing. Writing was  the most natural way I found to express myself. Poems turned into songs when I picked up the guitar and I’ve just stuck with it. 

How long have you been making/playing music? 

Jake: I started playing guitar at 16 and started doing open mics right out of highschool. So I’ve been playing out for 5 years or so. Writing songs for closer to 8. 

How would you describe the genre of music you make?

Jake: I call it country, especially now that I have a band with me. We really try to go for that honky tonk sound, but it’s always been about the songs for me. If a song of can resonate with someone, it doesn’t matter what shoes I’m wearing.

What bands do you consider similar to your own, music genre wise? 

Jake: I like to think we’re doing our own thing, but I got a grocery list of influences, that is probably pretty obvious. Townes Van Zandt, Waylon Jennings, John R Miller, Tyler Childers, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson. Just to name a few. 

What do you do for fun outside of music?

Jake: I enjoy hunting. Which to me is more about spending time in nature talking to God or laughing with my brothers in a box blind. (Maybe that’s why I never kill anything 😆)

Are you looking for a new and heartwarming sound? You should check out Silly Old Bear!  Silly Old Bear is a project started by Jacob and Conner over a year ago, and they are based around Peoria. Generally, they make indie folk music!  Silly Old Bear played live for the first time this year at Art & Music in the Garden which was an art vendor and music event put on in Luthy Botanical Garden by Mt. Estrogen Molotov

I have a sound to show you that will knock your socks off! Based out of Central Illinois, Estrogen Molotov is a transgender noise duo who offers a unique listening experience, and they are one of only a few noise bands in the area! Estrogen Molotov consists of Kailyn (he/him), who is based in Peoria, and DK (they/she), who is from Ottawa. They started making music in 2022, and this was one of Kailyn’s first creative musical projects. DK on the other hand has her own solo music under the name Space Dust, and they play live bass for Your Arms Are My Cocoon. Both members take turns banging the drum, playing guitar or bass, performing vocals, and taking control of the synth. They make use of unusual techniques to create sounds you wouldn’t expect to see performed on a stage. If you have never listened to noise before, it takes some getting used to, but it is hard to look away once it starts! Aftersome

You may be asking yourself,  after what? What is Aftersome? Well, you don't have to wonder any longer as I am here to enlighten you today.  Illinois is full of creative communities that build each other up and  support each other’s work.  Aftersome is one of numerous amazing bands in the central Illinois area.  I was introduced to Peoria's DIY music scene in 2021 when I made friends with them. Aftersome is a three-piece group in their early 20s from the Peoria area. The band consists of Luke, Lennon, and Ethan, who all happen to be left-handed! These three fellas are best friends, and they love Red Hot Chili Peppers.  Luke is the drummer, but also one of the singers! He is skilled at keeping a level singing voice with all the physical work involved in drumming. Lennon is the bassist and other singer of Aftersome.
