The Blank Stairs
The Blank Stairs is a three-piece group based in Peoria, and consists of Cami, Josh, and Abbey! Cami is the singer and the guitarist, and Josh is the other singer and the bassist, though they do a switch-a-roo and trade instruments during their shows! Lastly, Abbey plays drums! Cami and Abbey are also in Emily the Band, who I wrote about in a previous blog!
The Blank Stairs latest single is titled "EAT ROCKS" and it is my favorite release yet. You just can't help but want to sing and dance when they play it! They do have an album out, which was released in 2021, titled Face Paint. The song "Sidestep" from their album is certified bop, and I always want to rage when it comes on.
I contacted The Blank Stairs to ask a couple of questions! Cami and Josh took turns answering!
How long have you been making/playing music?
Cami: We've been making music together as a band roughly 7-8 years now, but individually, we've been playing music for about 10ish years!
Josh: Music evokes reactions and emotions. In a sense, the music that affects you almost becomes a part of you. Looking back, I still carry the feelings I felt the first time hearing “Strawberry Fields,” or “Appalachian Spring,” when the whole orchestra comes back in on the simple gifts motif. For me, I more strongly connect to the lyrics of a tune, but even something like that can trigger something in your brain that fills you with momentarily unidentifiable feelings. I could go on forever about this, but I think what I’m trying to say is that with all of the moments I have had with music it’s almost like an instinct to create it.
How would you describe the genre of music you make?
Cami: Our genre varies slightly per song, but we tend to lean towards indie/alternative rock.
What is the main message you are trying to tell with your music, or the main themes?
Josh: I write a lot about addiction issues, and relationships. I like writing pretty personal songs most. Like in our newest song, “Jamie,” I’m talking a lot about how it feels to have to stop being close with someone important to you. Sonically, we all tend to be very open minded so that does result in us getting some pretty unconventional ideas.
If you could play in any location, where?
Cami: If we could play anywhere, I think a big city like New York would be super cool, but also playing outside the country would be so fun! somewhere like Canada!!
